During this time Melissa chose to become an equine sports massage therapist.

During her licensing process Melissa was able to learner judge with such highly regarded professionals as Linda Allen, Tucker Ericson, James Zulia and Jack Robson. Melissa's ability to watch the form of the horse and the style of the rider was recognized by these judges and the USEF when they approved her as a recorded 'r' judge in Hunters, Hunter Equitation and Jumpers. In addition to her journey through the horse industry, Melissa also graduated from UC Davis, earning a B.S. in Animal Science, with an emphasis on the equine.
